Cystitis: Symptoms

Cystitis usually produces a frequent, urgent need to urinate and a burning or painful sensation while urinating. These symptoms usually develop over several hours or a day. The urgent need to urinate may cause an uncontrollable loss of urine (urge incontinence), especially in older people. Fever is rarely present. Pain is usually felt above the pubic bone and often in the lower back as well. Frequent urination during the night (nocturia) may be another symptom.

Cystitis may occur following radiation therapy to the pelvis for cancer treatment. The average time from the beginning of radiation therapy to initial symptoms can be several months to several years. Symptoms can include anything from mild bleeding to severe, recurrent bleeding and pain requiring hospitalization for treatment.

Cystitis is treated with a course of antibiotics. As the laboratory testing of the urine sample may take a couple of days, the doctor will often prescribe a broad-spectrum antibiotic in the meantime to bring relief from symptoms and to stop any infection progressing. It is important that the complete antibiotic course be taken, even if the symptoms resolve, as the infection can recur.

Mild cystitis will usually go away by itself in 2-4 days. If it doesn't, you should go to see your GP. In some cases (especially if you are pregnant), a short course (3 days) of antibiotics is given for cystitis. The symptoms should start to improve after the first day of treatment. If your symptoms do not improve, go back to your GP or call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

You should have a check up for other infections at your local GUM/Sexual Health Clinic if your Cystitis symptoms do not clear up. They may be caused by a sexually transmitted infection.
