Cystitis: Interstitial

Interstitial cystitis affects more women than men, the majority of them over 40 years of age. Many of these patients report that they had bladder problems in childhood. In addition, there appears to be a higher prevalence in Jewish women.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health are performing a study to identify these genes for susceptibility for interstitial cystitis. This study is entitled the Maryland Genetics of Interstitial Cystitis (MaGIC) study. The MaGIC study will investigate several hundred families with two or more blood relatives with interstitial cystitis. The study will seek to find changes in genes that are found far more commonly in family members who have interstitial cystitis than in those who do not have the disease.
Researchers have little information about the relationship between pregnancy and interstitial cystitis but believe that interstitial cystitis does not affect fertility or the health of the fetus. Some women have a remission from interstitial cystitis during pregnancy while others have more pain and pressure during the third trimester, possibly due to the weight of the fetus on the bladder.

Interstitial cystitis - images of bladder Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the bladder that causes frequent, urgent, and painful urination with or without pelvic discomfort. The natural lining of the bladder (epithelium) is protected from toxins in the urine by a coating of enzymes (mucopolysaccharides) called the GAG (glycoaminoglycan) layer.
If antibiotics do not work at all, it is possible that you have a kind of cystitis called interstitial cystitis (IC). This is a chronic inflammation of the bladder wall that is not caused by infection and does not respond to antibiotics. Your GP will be able to give you more information.

Some 450,000 persons in this country are afflicted with interstitial cystitis, a chronic, debilitating condition that seems to defy the diagnostic efforts of many physicians. It afflicts women 10 times more frequently than men, causing its victims to get up as often as 10 times in the night to urinate, with pain in the pelvis, bladder, and vagina.
