Cysticercosis: Studies
built 615 days ago
Costs of health education intervention for control of porcine cysticercosis considered for pig farmers in this study included the cost of the farmer to attend the training and costs for implementing intervention measures. The cost of the smallholder pig farmer attending the health education training was considered as ones' opportunity cost for four hours, which were used for the training. This included the travel and the actual training times. The average time used by the farmers to and from the training centre was estimated through interviewing a random sample of farmers who attended the training. The actual costs of transport of farmers to and from the training centres could not be determined because almost all farmers walked, with only a few who travelled by bicycles. The average time used for the actual training of the farmers was calculated from the actual times recorded during the training.

The treatment of parenchymal cysticercosis remains controversial, primarily due to a lack of adequate controlled studies. There are effective antihelminthics such as albendazole and praziquantel. However, it is unknown whether these medications improve the clinical course or, as some researchers noted, exacerbate the neurological compromise.3,9

Dilated ophthalmologic examination is sensitive for the detection of ocular cysts and is necessary for anyone diagnosed with cysticercosis to rule out ocular involvement. Likewise, diagnosis of any nonneurologic cysticercosis (e.g., in the muscle or skin) warrants a history, physical examination, and imaging studies to rule out neurologic involvement.
