Cysticercosis: Infections

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection common to cottontail rabbits and snowshoe hares in Michigan. The parasites are conspicuous and raise many inquiries from hunters who discover them when dressing out rabbits. They appear as sacs of clear fluid containing small white objects. Hunters see the parasites as "spots on the liver" and misinterpret their presence as evidence the rabbit is infected with tularemia. The parasites are the larval stage of tape worms of dogs and wild carnivores, principally foxes and coyotes.

Cysticercosis is an infection of any larval cysts. In common usage ... this refers specifically to the cestode Taenia solium. Humans are the only definitive host and Taenia solium eggs are shed in the feces of infected humans. The eggs are ingested by pigs that serve as intermediate hosts and develop cysts in the muscle tissue. Cysticercosis is probably the most common parasitic infestation of the human nervous system. Humans acquire the infestation by eating infected undercooked pork (measly pork). But cysticercosis is acquired by ingestion of eggs (encysted larvae) of the pork tapeworm, T.solium, either by ingestion of contaminated salads or water, or by auto infection due to ano-oral contamination or reverse peristalsis. Tapeworm infestation can occur only in nonvegetarians, but Cysticercosis may occur in vegetarians ....

Cysticercosis is not spread from person to person. However, a person infected with the intestinal tapeworm stage of the infection (T. solium) will shed tapeworm eggs in their bowel movements. Tapeworm eggs that are accidentally swallowed by another person can cause infection.
