Cyclobenzaprine: Muscles
built 643 days ago
Cyclobenzaprine [1] is a skeletal muscle relaxant. It is marketed as Flexeril (5 and 10 mg tablets), and ... as Fexmid (7.5 mg tablet). Both the 5 and 10 milligram tablets are available generically. Fexmid is not available generically and few pharmacies carry it for this reason. Once-a-day extended release formulation, Amrix, has been approved by the American FDA in 2007 and is available in 15 and 30 mg capsules.[2]

Cyclobenzaprine is the generic form of Flexeril. Cyclobenzaprine is a skeletal muscle relaxant. Cyclobenzaprine [R]elieves muscle spasms of local origin but is not effective in spasms which originate from diseases in the brain or spinal cord.

Cyclobenzaprine has been shown to reduce or abolish skeletal muscle hyperactivity. It is thought to act within the CNS at brain stem rather than spinal chord levels, although the latter may contribute to some of its therapeutic effect on skeletal muscle relaxant activity. Pharmacological studies in animals have shown a similarity between the effects of the structurally-related tricyclic antidepressants and cyclobenzaprine. The most frequently encountered adverse effects of cyclobenzaprine include the anticholinergic effects of drowsiness, dry mouth and dizziness. Other CNS effects include blurred vision, confusion, anxiety, agitation, psychosis, abnormal thinking, and hallucinations. Cardiovascular effects include increased heart rate and palpitations.

Cyclobenzaprine is typically prescribed to relieve pain and muscle spasms. Typically, muscle spasms occur in an injury to stabilize the affected body part and prevent further damage. The spasm of the muscles can increase the pain level. It is believed that by decreasing muscular spasm, pain is diminished. A common application would be that of a whiplash injury in a car accident. Muscle relaxants such as Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) and Orphenadrine Citrate (Norflex) have ... been studied in the treatment of fibromyalgia.

Cyclobenzaprine is ... prescribed as Flexeril. It is commonly used to treat pain from injury, muscle spasms, and other painful musculoskeletal conditions for a short term period or two to three weeks. Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxant that also interrupts the brain’s reception of pain signals sent by the nerves.

Answer: Cyclobenzaprine is usually used for muscle spasm. Possibly it was given to reduce some of the cervical spasm secondary to the head trauma. It is not useful in treating swelling and has some effect on pain.
