Purina is recalling all sizes of their ALPO brand varieties of its Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food stamped with the label “Best Before Feb. 2009″. This is a new announcement made today in reaction to the melamine found in the wheat gluten. Purina is admitting to using the same supplier as Menu Foods.

The government claims this cut can be realized through operational efficiencies, but cuts to programming will wipe out organizations like The National Council of Women of Canada and the Canadian Feminist Alliance. The conservative lobby group REAL Women applauded the cuts and is lobbying the government for further reductions in funding. The Prime Ministers Chief of Staff has cited REAL Womens concern about funding for womens groups as a key reason for cutting funding for Status of Women Canada.

The Shoulder was a prime candidate for value adding because it is a widely available sub-primal with large muscles within, but through traditional cutting practices, was yielding cuts that were considered less than premium to the end user. Muscle profiling revealed that both the shoulder clod and the top blade were potential sources of cuts with desirable characteristics. With some creative knife-work these single muscles produced tender, easy-to-prepare steaks and roasts. The market responded and today these cuts are being offered in both retail and foodservice outlets.

The rib, short loin, and sirloin render the most delicate cuts of beef. Broiling, grilling, sautéing and roasting reign supreme here. Rib steaks, (... known as delmonico or prime rib), rib eye steaks, (without the bone), and rib roasts, naturally come from the rib. The sirloin provides a variety of sirloin steaks differing on where in the sirloin they are cut from. Sirloin can also be ground and mixed with ground chuck for primo hamburgers.

The political nature of these cuts sends a very disturbing signal. Though the government claims the cuts came after careful reflection, most of the cuts came from programs opposed by the Conservatives while in opposition but not mentioned in the governments recent election platform. The decisions on the cuts were managed by the Prime Ministers Office with little or no consultation with those affected. Civil servants and officials who run the programs learned of the cuts in the media, not through any prior consultation, and are now responsible for implementing the cuts where the programs still exist.
