Curling at the 2006 Winter Olympics was held in the town of Pinerolo, Italy from February 13 to February 24. It proved to be the sleeper hit in terms of television ratings in Italy. According to a CBC feature, curling at the 2006 Winter Games drew 5 million viewers, eclipsing ice hockey and figure skating. This, and the success of the Italian men's curling team created a surge of interest in curling within Italy, where there was no previous tradition of the sport and only a few hundred players.

Curling is of Scottish origin and widely popular in Canada. It has ... grown internationally significantly in the last 10 years and is now played in more than thirty countries world wide. This was recognized by the International Olympic Committee by accepting curling as a full medal sport at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan 1998.

Curling is more competitive than the other nights of league play. Each team consists of six (6) curlers with one member ... acting as team manager. You may enter an entire team or you can sign up individually expressing interest in becoming part of a team. Managers can elect players from that roster to round out their teams. Teams that play together for the entire year make for more competitive teams or as good practice for playing together for attending away bonspiels. The league managers are Bob & Barbara Enos.

Curling made its Olympic debut at the original Olympic Games in 1924. It came back in the 1932 Lake Placid Games as a demonstration sport, but then went on a 56-year Olympic hiatus, until it returned as a demonstration sport at the 1988 and 1992 Games. Curling was brought back again as an official medal sport at the 1998 Nagano Games.

Curling competitions in Finland can be divided in three categories; Finnish Championships, local leagues and tournaments. In addition to competitions held in Finland many teams attend regularly in international tournaments such as Tallinn Cup held in Estonia. International guests in Finnish tournaments are always very welcome.

The ancient Scottish game of curling has been a central feature of the Maniototo since the late 1870’s, the first reported game 6 July 1878. Long cold winters made work difficult and Curling provided a way to pass the time. The traditions and etiquette of curling which were diligently observed have become part of the folklore of Central Otago.
