The official language of Cuba is Spanish, but immigration has left pockets of Haitians and Jamaicans in Cuba who speak French-based and English-based creoles (hybrid languages created by the mixture of European and African languages). April 14, 2003: The Mexican government issued a statement condemning Cuba's execution of three men convicted in a brief trial of hijacking a ferry to flee to the US. "The Foreign Relations Department profoundly regrets the application of the death penalty against three Cuban citizens," the department said in a press statement. The department said it's rejection of the Cuban executions was based on "the spirit and tradition of Mexican law enforcement, and its position on the death penalty." (AP, 13/4/03)

CUC is the currency most tourists will use in Cuba. It is how you will pay for hotels, official taxis, entry into museums, meals at restaurants, cigars, rum, etc. Conversion into CUC can be done at exchange houses (casa de cambio, or cadeca). These are located in many hotels and in other places throughout the cities. CUC are valued at 28 times the value of CUP. Tourists are permitted to import or export a maxiumum of CUP 100 or CUC 200 at any one time.
