Croatia, like its immediate neighbors, has stood at the crossroads of Europe, the Near East and Asia for millennia. It has been a part of a number of empires and has itself been the site of important cities and centers of learning and the arts. While not as heavily damaged as some of its former co-republics in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Croatia was greatly impacted by the Balkan wars of the early and mid-1990s. As Croatia continues to reform its communist-era institutions as well as build on its numerous successes in political and economic development, it is rapidly becoming a key tourist, economic and business area in Central and Eastern Europe.

Characterised by preserved natural heritage – it concieves the great number of the national parks in small land surface. The main trhee natural wholes of Croatia, namely lowland, mountains and coastal, differ one from another in their basic characteristics. Croatia stands for many diverse natural resources and attractions: the most interesting coast in Europe with 1185 islands on the Adriatic, crystal clear, clean blue sea, Dubrovnik - the world's most beautiful and best preserved medieval city, Hum - the smallest town in the world, thousand years of different cultures.

The Republic of Croatia is a small country between the Mediterranean Sea and Central Europe. It was one of the republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, but has been independent since 1991. It is a candidate for membership in the European Union.

Despite the achievement of autonomy in local affairs, Croatia remained restless because of continuing Magyarization. Cultural and political Croat and South Slav organizations arose, notably the Croatian Peasant party, founded in the early 20th cent. With the collapse of Austria-Hungary (1918), the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later renamed Yugoslavia) was formed. Serbs dominated the new state... and promoted centralization, ignoring Croat desires for a federal structure.

From the ruinous break-up of former Yugoslavia, Croatia emerged as an independent country composed of two contrasting cultures. The long stretch of coast that runs from Istria to Dalmatia bears a strong Italian influence, while the interior has a strong central European flavour. But it's Croatia's appeal as a sun 'n' sea destination that lures millions of holidaymakers. The yachting crowd has sprinkled glitter on the islands of Hvar and Korčula while cruise lines have made Dubrovnik an essential port of call on their Mediterranean circuit.
