Croatia is a country at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and Central Europe. Stretching on the coastline of Adriatic Sea, while sharing land borders with Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. Its landscape is varied as the plains, lakes and rolling hills in the north and northeast, densely wooded mountains in Lika and Gorski Kotar, rocky coastlines on the Adriatic Sea, it is the most beautiful part of Europe drawing the increasing number of tourists today. Croatia is pleasant in both of the inland and the coastal parts. Zagreb, the capital is notable for sitting lots of medieval charm, museums, while the Dobronik and other coastline cities enjoy Mediterranean sun.

Croatia has been a member of the United Nations since 1992, and contributes troops to 10 UN operations including those in Haitii, Cyprus, Georgia, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia and Eritrea, and Kashmir. Since 2003, Croatia has sent a military police unit to support the International Stabilization Assistance Force in Afghanistan. Croatia is a member of the World Trade Organization and the Central European Free Trade Organization.

In 1102 a pact between his successor and the Croatian tribal chiefs established a personal union of Croatia and Hungary under the Hungarian monarch. Although Croatia remained linked with Hungary for eight centuries, the Croats were sometimes able to choose their rulers independently of Budapest. In personal union with Hungary, Croatia retained its own diet and was governed by a ban, or viceroy. After the battle of Mohács in 1526 most of Croatia came under Turkish rule. In 1527 the Croatian feudal lords agreed to accept the Hapsburgs as their kings in return for common defense and retention of their privileges. During the following century Croatia served as a Hapsburg outpost in the defense of central Europe from a Turkish onslaught.
