Cristie Kerr: Lorena Ochoa
built 635 days ago
To win Sunday, Kerr had to turn back the challenge of Mexico's Lorena Ochoa, the No. 1-ranked player in women's golf. Fighting her swing, pushing shots, she had to find a way to master a Pine Needles course that for the third time in 12 years proved to be a most fitting Open test.
The match-up of Kerr versus Sorenstam attracted a record crowd for the final round. It did not disappoint as the two battled head-to-head and ... survived a late charge from LPGA Player of the Year Lorena Ochoa.
Kerr won on five-under par 279 to claim her 10th LPGA title and her first major. Ochoa, who carded a 71, and Brazil’s Angela Park, who birdied the last for a 70, finished tied for second two shots behind on three-under.
Children and teens waiting on the other side of the grandstand cheered Ochoa and Kerr as they walked to the scoring trailer. A minute passed, then two. “Where’s Morgan?” a girl asked loudly.

Ochoa, stoic most of the sun-splashed day, completed a third-round 68 that put her into the final group with Kerr. There ... was Morgan Pressel, perhaps the sentimental favorite at Pine Needles, where she made her Open debut in 2001 at age 13.
