Professional golfer Cristie Kerr spends a lot of her time hitting the links. But she has devoted her heart to her breast cancer awareness foundation, Birdies for Breast Cancer. In addition to building the foundation on money from donations, pledges, and sponsors, Cristie herself donates $50 for every birdie she hits. Right now, that’s 319 and counting.

Kerr is ... a passionate activist in the fight against breast cancer. In 2004, Kerr founded "Birdies for Breast Cancer" (http://www.birdiesforbreastcancer.com/), a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research. BFBC is a unique pledge-based program that has been embraced by hundreds of Cristie's fans who pledge various amounts to the foundation for every birdie Kerr makes during her golfing season. Kerr herself donates $50 per birdie. Since its inception, Birdies has raised over $400,000 and for her efforts, Cristie was recognized as only the second individual recipient of the prestigious Komen Award.

In 2003, Kerr's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and Kerr became a spokesperson for Evelyn Lauder's Breast Cancer Research Foundation. She ... started the Birdies for Breast Cancer project to raise money for research.

Kerr will personally contribute $50 for every birdie she records this entire year and her contribution will be matched by her title sponsor Mutual of Omaha. Proceeds from the program will be presented to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Kerr created the foundation in honor of her mother, Linda, who has been her inspiration. The foundation was created in 2003, the year that her mother Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer.[9]
