Cristie Kerr: Annika Sorenstam
built 624 days ago
Paired with third-round leader Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr played catch-up today at the Wendy's Championship for Children. Annika Sorenstam had already finished her round and was sitting comfortably in the clubhouse watching the action. Today Annika enjoyed the euphoria of a bogey-free round dotted with six birdies, her first one dropping in at the first and concluding with a fist-pumping birdie on eighteen.

The next year, after her mother was found to have breast cancer, Kerr began an exercise program that shed pounds and helped add trophies. Still, she was overshadowed by Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb and Se Ri Pak - each one a major winner- and the emergence of several flashy, competitive teenagers.

With Sorenstam unable to mount a charge, the task of trying catch Kerr fell to her good friend Natalie Gulbis and to McGill. Neither has won on the LPGA Tour. And neither could gain the steam necessary.
Kerr had been left out of most conversations about top young American players, with most of the attention going to Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome and Pressel. No one can ignore her now, not with her name ready to be engraved right below Annika Sorenstam on the biggest trophy in women's golf.

Pine Needles would like to congratulate Cristie Kerr on winning her first professional major. She joins a distinguished list of US Women’s Open champions at Pine Needles that includes Hall of Fame members Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb.
Sorenstam shot 69 in the morning to pull within seven shots of Kerr. But Sorenstam played the first six holes of the afternoon round in 4 over and never was a real threat. Sorenstam finished tied for 12th at 2 over.
