Protect Your Bills and Credit Cards Unscrupulous scam artists raid mailboxes to gather renewal credit cards and bills to obtain credit card numbers. Be aware of when your cards and bills are due to arrive. If they are late, contact your credit card company. Endorse all credit cards when they arrive. Keep a record of your credit card numbers in a secure place. Include in that record the expiration date, phone number and address of the card issuer.

Five people convicted of what UK police called a "sophisticated" credit card fraud scheme have received jail sentences of as long as five-and-a-half years. The group possessed 32,000 stolen credit card numbers. Officials suspect the stolen data came from a US database. The five used the stolen credit card numbers to fund a profligate lifestyle. All have been recommended for deportation upon completion of their sentences.

Counterfeiting credit cards, using lost or stolen cards, and fraudulently acquiring credit cards through the mail are all common types of credit card fraud. One form that is notably on the rise is “misappropriation,” the crime of using the credit card number by itself to make purchases. All such laws are investigated and prosecuted primarily under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Secret Service, though other state and federal law enforcement agencies can pursue a case.
