Credit Card Fraud: Customers
built 661 days ago
Most American adults know about the crime of credit card fraud, but few know so much of it occurs at restaurants. Whether at a fine-dining spot or a quick-service burger joint, the opportunity for theft exists whenever a card leaves the hand of the customer.
In the US, cardholders can report credit card fraud to the FTC and to regional and local law enforcements. The FTC works to stop fraudulent and unethical business practices and provides customers with information on how to recognize, report, and protect themselves from such fraudulent behaviors.

When a credit card order is received by fax, require the customer to ... fax copies of both sides of the credit card. This at least provides proof that the customer has possession of the credit card at the time of the order. You could also require a copy of their state-issued ID, or drivers license. It also provides additional proof the person authorized the purchase, preventing a chargeback.
The lawsuits are starting to fly, alleging that TJX and one of its credit card partners, Fifth Third Bank, failed to secure the personal data of millions of customers. A class-action lawsuit was filed last week in U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts on behalf of several banks affected by the breach, including AmeriFirst Bank of Union Springs, Ala. A consumer-based class-action suit was filed Jan. 19 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.

Romania is the home to many legal start-up Internet companies, but it is ... a safe haven for homegrown hackers who pull off millions of dollars of credit card scams each year. Although it is not legally liable for financial losses incurred by its customers, eBay has decided to pursue the criminals who are undermining the company's reputation of bringing together buyer and seller in a mutually trusting atmosphere.
AVS is supported by most US credit cards and is not supported by non-US banks. As with the security code check, it may work for you or not depending on where your customers are located. For merchants who ship goods mostly within the US, the Address Verification System is a must have. Even within the US, there will be a small percentage AVS declines due to non-supporting banks and trouble with PO box addresses. In these cases, the offline credit card processing payment option may be used as an alternative.
