Creativity techniques are heuristic methods to facilitate creativity in a person or a group of people. And are most often used in creative problem solving. Generally, most creativity techniques use associations between the goal (or the problem), the current state (which may be an imperfect solution to the problem), and some stimulus (possibly selected randomly). There is an analogy between many creativity techniques and methods of evolutionary computation. In problem-solving contexts, the random word creativity technique is perhaps the simplest such method. A person confronted with a problem is presented with a randomly generated word, in the hopes of a solution arising from any associations between the word and the problem.

Creativity's rankings are a tabulation of award results from Cannes, The Art Directors Club, D&AD, Clios, ANDYs, AICP and One Show. Two rankings are calculated: the first "raw" ranking is formulated by assigning one point for every award received regardless of media designation or category; the second "cooked" numbers assign point values to Gold, Silver, Bronze and Grand Prix/Best of Show. All shows are scored identically, with the exception of Cannes, which is scored at a mild premium. The "cooked" numbers are used in recognizing the industry rankings leaders.

Creativity needs a completely different mindset. More than that, it needs a different way of being-in-the-world than operational management. Business schools aren’t practicing academic birth control because they churn out graduates who think alike. This is not surprising. Typically management consultants are valued by the school they attended and the quality of their education. These people may be very intelligent, but are they successful in adapting to a world that thrives on the new?

Creativity goes beyond possession and use of artistic or musical talent. In this context, talent refers to the possession of a high degree of technical skill in a specialized area. Thus an artist may have wonderful technical skills, but may not succeed in evoking the emotional response that makes the viewer feel that a painting, for example, is unique. It is important to keep in mind that creativity is evidenced not only in music, art, or writing, but throughout the curriculum, in science, social studies and other areas.

Creativity in childhood is typically assessed through paper-and-pencil measures such as the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking. These tests are designed to measure divergent thinking, such as fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Signification criticisms have been raised about these tests as measures of creativity. First is the general problem that there are no universally accepted definitions of creativity. Second, critics of creativity tests argue that these tests do not measure creativity per se but instead reflect the specific abilities that are assessed by the tests. Third, the scores on these tests often depend partly on speed, which is not necessarily a criterion for creativity.

Creativity can be introduced at any point in the circle, but it is critical to continue around the circle to determine if a decision at one stage will require a re-evaluation of a decision that was skipped. At times it will be necessary to check back to a previous step and at other times it will be necessary to anticipate a stage in the next iteration, thereby jumping across the circle. For example, it will be necessary to check with the client to make certain that the ideas generated are consistent with the objective, which is a step backwards in the process. It is necessary ... to think ahead. Will the solution be consistent with the facts that exist in the future? This type of question must be asked in the next iteration around the circle.
