Crash (2004)
built 190 days ago
It's hard to describe Crash without it sounding earnest. But while this provocative drama tackles racism, class and looking beyond appearances, it's anything but worthy or dull. Following several lives as they, yes, crash together during one day in LA, it's fuelled by powerhouse performances from an outstanding cast. Sandra Bullock is startling as a bitchy housewife, Don Cheadle brings beaten-down grace to the role of a weary detective and, as a racist cop, Matt Dillon's steely presence holds everything together. Some critics have criticised Crash for its reliance on coincidence. Which, given it's a deliberately structured modern parable, is a bit like damning War Of The Worlds for having aliens.

"Crash" starts like a tinderbox suddenly aflame, with two deceptively collegiate-looking African-American guys (Larenz Tate and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges) ambling through an upper-middle-class L.A. neighborhood and joking about racism, then abruptly carjacking a Lincoln Navigator - which belongs to an ambitious white district attorney (Brendan Fraser) and his smug, prejudiced wife (Sandra Bullock).

With its plethora of storylines and characters Crash has a lot going on, but amazingly every moment is of the upmost quality. Other movies that adopt the mutli-storyline approach often suffer from diluted characters that can seem similar and individually unimportant. Not so with Crash, here every character is truly unique and each situation concerns different issues.

Somewhat unexpectedly, 88 percent of the volunteers attributed symptoms of discomfort to their crash exposure. All reported symptoms were transient and none required medical treatment. All symptoms were characterized as either minimal or slight in severity, and none had a duration exceeding one week. The mean duration was one day. The predominant symptoms were posterior neck discomfort, followed (in order of reported frequency) by shoulder and thoracic spine discomfort. Several of the volunteers had symptoms lasting two to three days, although these were characterized as minimal or slight in severity only.

(History--)--> The roots of the idea of "Crash" are in Rotterdam in 2003 where a former member of an Estonian theatre group (EVS volunteer from Estonia) joined the activities of a local youth theatre group. Many similarities and differences were discovered in the cultural and personal sphere. Consequently, the idea to dive deeper into the question "what elements from which contexts have an impact on youngsters?" derived. During the present project this idea of personal and cultural experiences would be explored by the Estonian and Dutch theatre groups.

Accolades for this year's best film, Crash, inspire meta-movie fans that Hollywood's recent tide of second-rate thrillers and violent shockers is finally beginning to turn. Crash models the zenith of meta-filmmaking. With its recent surge of Oscar attention, here's hoping it comes back around to film houses, so those who missed it before will have the chance to view it on the "big screen" once more.
