Craps: Bets

Pass line: The fundamental bet in craps is the pass line bet... called the win line in some countries. A pass line bet is won if the come-out roll is a 7 or 11. If the come-out roll is 2, 3 or 12, the bet loses. If instead the come-out roll establishes a point, and that point is rolled again, the bet wins. If a point is established and a 7 is rolled before the point is re-rolled, the bet loses.

The craps table is covered in felt that is printed with a diagram showing the spaces for the types of bets. There is a center section where Hardways and One Roll bets can be placed. The ends of the table each have sections for the Pass Line, Come, Place, Field, and other bets. The ends of the table are mirror images of each other.

Some craps know-it-alls think anyone who makes Pass or Come bets without taking Odds is an idiot. Ditto for Don't Pass and Don't Come. The reasoning is that supplementing these bets with Odds reduces the house advantage on the total in action.

The first time you ever get to a craps table, make a small bet on the pass line. The pass line is the strip that runs all around the craps table's layout.

All craps bets are bets on the next throw. The basic craps bet pays 7:1 if 2, 3, or 12 is thrown, and loses otherwise. The craps 2 bet pays 30:1 if a 2 is thrown and loses otherwise. Similarly, the craps 12 bet pays 30:1 if a 12 is thrown and loses otherwise. Finally, the craps 3 bet pays 15:1 if a 3 is thrown and loses otherwise

Come Bets & Don't Come - The come bet area takes up a sizable portion of the center of the craps desk. The come bet is essentially the same as the pass line bet, but can be made after a come-out roll has already established a point. The opposite of the come bet is the don't come bet, in the same way that the opposite of the pass line bet is the don't pass bet. Same house percentages of 1.414% and 1.402%, as the pass line bets.
