Cranberries: Bogs

Berry bounty: Rob Rubini hauls cranberries at Peter Beaton's bog in Wareham, Mass. Cranberries were a late-season staple for native Americans in New England for thousands of years and have played key roles in American history, historians say. Early European settlers in Plymouth survived cold winters with help from cranberries, which native tribes taught them to harvest from the region's bogs.

Cranberry harvest in New Jersey Cranberries are a group of evergreen dwarf shrubs or trailing vines in the genus Vaccinium subgenus Oxycoccus, or in some treatments, in the distinct genus Oxycoccus. They are found in acidic bogs throughout the cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
Cranberries require an acid soil with a pH between 4.0 and 5.5. During the growing season, March through October, cranberry bogs are managed with drained soil. Irrigation may be required during fruit set through harvest. Sprinkler systems may be installed under the surface of the bogs or placed on the surface and removed before each harvest. Flooding is used for winter protection, harvest and pest control. Because of the essential need for water during cranberry cultivation, many growers have water reservoirs adjacent to the bogs.

Cranberries grow on vines in boggy areas. Cranberries were first cultivated in Massachusetts around 1815 and are only one of three major native North American fruits. Some cranberry beds have been around for over 100 years.
Cranberries are grown in huge sandy bogs off of vines in Northern Europe and in some of the northern United States. They are harvested in September and October, yet their peak-selling season is between Halloween and Christmas!
