Craig Stevens Missouri, in July 1918, Craig Stevens originally intended to be a dentist were it not for the drama classes he began taking at the University of Kansas in the late 1930s. Leaving college, Stevens went to California and, through his work at the Pasadena Playhouse, eventually found work in films. His film appearance came in a brief bit in Columbia's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939; with Jean Arthur and James Stewart). The young actor was signed by Warner Bros. in 1940. The studio immediately cast Stevens in a variety of supporting roles in features and lead roles in Warners' two-reelers.
Craig Stevens has been a photographic educator since 1975, when he received his MFA degree from Ohio University. For 12 years he was associate director of the Maine Photographic Workshops, and he was involved in the creation and development of the Workshops’ Resident Program. In 1994, he was director of workshops for the international "Recontres" program in Arles, France. He has ... served on the faculties of the Santa Fe Workshops, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and Les Ateliers de l’Image.
Levade, Lochinvar and Craig Stevens Craig Stevens ... has a deep commitment to bringing this work to the English speaking world. He has translated 33 books from French to English. Many of his translations, including "Equestrian Questions" by General L'Hotte, were previously unavailable to the English speaking audience.
In Craig Stevens's unique chipcarving style he creates images from nature by using carved shapes and patterns rather than outlining the subject. With a brush painter's sensitivity these carved shapes create a flow and movement that imitates the simple but graceful patterns of the natural world. The initial drawing creates the foundation of each carving. The book shares Craig's method with other carvers, taking them step-by-step through the carving process, beginning with an introduction to the tools and the wood. Every carving step for the main project is included with a clear color photograph and a concise description of the carving technique that is used. The pattterns are included as is a gallery of variations and applications.
Craig Stevens abandoned all plans for a career in dentistry when he became involved in student productions at the University of Kansas. Trained at Pasadena Playhouse and Paramount's acting school, Stevens was signed to a stock Warner Bros. contract in 1941. He was well showcased as a soft-hearted gangster in At the Stroke of Twelve, a 1941 two-reel adaptation of Damon Runyon's The Old Doll's House, but his feature film roles were merely adequate at best. By 1950, Stevens was reduced to playing a standard mustachioed villain in the Bowery Boys epic Blues Busters. His saving turnaround came about when Stevens was cast in the title role of the 1958 Blake Edwards-produced TV private eye series Peter Gunn.
