Craig Stevens: United States
built 185 days ago
Stevens was in his 20s when his stepfather presented him with an antique Orvis bamboo rod. Stevens was a longtime fisherman, having spent his youth divided between conventional fishing and his other love, BMX bike racing. Growing up in Hamden, north of New Haven, he and his cousin Chris would ride their bikes down to the reservoir. They would be like a modern Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn lashing truck-tire inner tubes together and throwing a piece of plywood on top for a deck. They’d pick up their “throwaway” fishing gear that they had hidden in the woods, hop aboard their makeshift vessel and then tie it under a bridge. Their location under the bridge and the expendable gear was necessary because fishing wasn’t allowed in the state reservoirs and the boys needed to keep out of sight of the patrolling DEP inspectors.
Afterward, when asked about the Craig account of his suspicions regarding the FBI, Stevens defiantly told FOX News, "You got my statement from my office." Pressed further, he quietly said, "I'm having a good day. How about you?"

While Craig is no longer involved in showing, he has judged shows and taught clinics to private groups and riding federations both in the states and abroad. Mr. Stevens has given clinics for both the Swedish National Equestrian Federation and the United States Dressage Foundation (USDF). He is one of very few Americans recognized as having the skill to offer clinics in Europe, he's a regular featured trainer in national magazines in Scandinavia and the UK. His clinics abroad are booked months in advance.Craig's students both in the Americas and Europe range from true beginners to instructors, trainers and judges.
At 7NEWS, Stevens has reported a wide range of stories: several hurricanes beginning with "Andrew," the Oklahoma City bombing, elections from the local level to national races, including the disputed 2000 Presidential Election from Austin, Texas. He spent weeks following the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace and the manhunt for Andrew Cunanan, Pope John Paul II's visits to Cuba and the United States, the death of JFK, Jr., the Elian Gonzalez saga, and Fidel Castro's visit to the United Nations.

Though little known in the United States, Craig is considered a "master" in Sweden, where he has a large and enthusiastic following. He has traveled to that country seven times in the last year and a half, giving both clinics and private lessons. He has ... taught in Canada and Finland, and has invitations from Denmark, Norway, Germany, Australia and the U.K. He has given a clinic at the Swedish National Riding School and an instructors' clinic for the Swedish National Equestrian Federation, and has had articles written about him in many publications, including Ridsport, Sweden's largest horse magazine. Dag Natterqvist, Sweden's most decorated rider, has called Craig "the most advanced instructor to come to Sweden since the early 1950s."
Stevens originally had been under investigation over possible assistance he may have received for home remodeling from a business partner and owner of Alaska's largest oil engineering firm. VECO Inc. former CEO Bill Allen pleaded guilty in May to bribing state officials.
