Craig Stevens: Record
built 184 days ago
Craig Stevens may have won the feature race in record time, but fastest around the full 125km Moehau Man course was a start-studded Tauranga and Auckland conglomerate of Jon Hume, Sergey Kokorin and Oscar Stielau. Hume is a former New Zealand mountain biking star, Kokorin a former Russian ultra-marathon rep and Stielau a former South African who has become one of New Zealand’s best long distance kayakers. Together they smashed the previous course record with an amazing time of 6hrs 35min 38secs.

In 2004, Stevens made his Olympic Games debut at Athens. There, he won silver as part of the Australian 4x200 m relay team and ... made the final in the 1500 m. He relinquished his place in the 400 m freestyle for World Record Holder Ian Thorpe, who was disqualified in the event at the Australian trials.

From there Stevens was never going to be headed and the question was not whether he would win but how much he could lop off the course record set by Tauranga’s Troy Griffin in 2002. But even Stevens himself was surprised by the eventual answer, when his winning time of 7hrs 46min 55secs smashed the record by a whopping 25min.

Flaskas said that Thorpe's position on the matter of Stevens surrendering his 400 berth had not changed. He reinforced his swimmer's view that if Stevens did choose to give up his spot, before he did anything he would like to know the reasons behind the decision. Thorpe has said that if Stevens has been pressured into withdrawing to allow the world record-holder to swim, then Thorpe would not accept the swim.
