Coyote Ugly: Bars
built 240 days ago
If your idea of a film is Barbie doll girls in skin tight outfits dancing on a bar, then Coyote Ugly is a must-see for you. Sad to say it, but there's more plot in your average rock video, of which Coyote Ugly never progresses far beyond. What's most annoying is the wasted opportunity to deliver more, with first-time director David McNally (Kangaroo Jack) showing flashes of talent, and Piper Perabo (The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Slap Her She's French) giving a decent performance despite the shallowness of the part.

The plot of Coyote Ugly lumbers along slowly. Violet meets a cute kid who works for minimum wage as a fry cook yet can still afford to keep a gorgeous classic convertible in Manhattan. Violet's father (John Goodman) sees her dancing on the bar at Ugly and tells her he's ashamed of her. Then for no reason he suddenly gets hit by a car, just so when the two of them reconcile it can happen over a hospital bed, which is the required setting for such reconciliations.

Though not as outrageous as depicted in the 2000 blockbuster movie of the same name, Coyote Ugly brings some raucous fun to the banking mecca of downtown Charlotte. Barflies with a penchant for loud music, strong drinks and sexy bartenders will feel right at home; frat boys share shots of whiskey with bikers and NASCAR fans amid bras hanging from rafters and car hoods mounted on the wall.

Coyote Ugly's trademark is the sexy female bartenders who get up on the bar and dance, sing and encourage patrons to drink more alcohol. Surprisingly, you will find a pretty even mix of men and women. The men come to ogle the "Coyotes," and the women come to let loose and dance. Women are encouraged to get up on the bar and cavort with the bartenders. Sorry, men aren't allowed on the bar. Of course, with all the women to look at, most don't seem to mind.

From hit-making producer Jerry Bruckheimer (GONE IN 60 SECONDS, ARMEGEDDON) comes the special unrated extended cut of COYOTE UGLY. It's the intoxicating sexy comedy starring an unbeatable cast of hot new stars including Piper Perabo (CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN) and Maria Bello (PAYBACK). Moving to New York to pursue her dream of becoming a famous songwriter, Violet Sanford (Perabo) finds herself desperate and broke. Through a twist of fate, the shy, innocent Violet lands a job as a barmaid at the hottest nightclub in town -- the down and dirty, wild and fun Coyote Ugly. Overflowing with attitude, the 'Coyotes' spend more time on top of the bar than behind it, tantalizing the standing-room-only crowd with their outrageous antics! It's one wild adventure for a small-town girl with big city dreams.

There is very little of anything original in Coyote Ugly. Except for some woman dancing on top of a bar, this movie follows the familiar plot of a young woman from a small town trying to make it in the big city. Inspired by a 1993 article in GQ, Coyote Ugly is formulaic almost to the point of being bland. Violet Sanford (Piper Perabo, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, White Boys) moves from New Jersey to New York in order to begin a career in songwriting. It goes nowhere. She is bright-eyed and naive, and thinks that her innocence can get her a job.
