Cowpox is a viral disease that normally affects the udders and teats of cows. On rare occasions, it may be transmitted to humans and produce a characteristic red skin rash and abnormally enlarged lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy). Cowpox is caused by the vaccinia virus and has been known to cause systemic reactions (generalized vaccinia) in some people who have been recently vaccinated against cowpox.

Cowpox (... known as Catpox) is a disease of the skin that is caused by a virus known as the Cowpox virus. The pox is related to the [V]accinia virus, and got its name from cow maids touching the udders of infected cows. The ailment manifests itself in the form of red blisters and is transmitted by touch from infected animals to humans.
The contagious virus responsible for Cowpox in cattle can ... affect other species including humans, small wild mammals and cats. There is only one reported case of cowpox affecting a dog. Signs of the disease include skin lesions (nodules, scabs and ulcers), eye problems (conjunctivitis) and respiratory signs (pneumonia). Cowpox in cats occurs mainly in Europe and Asia.
