Cowboy Bebop: Series
built 653 days ago
From a storytelling standpoint, Cowboy Bebop is a very simple series. Episodes flow chronologically, but with only a few exceptions, there is no grand story at work here. This is an episodic show, where nearly every 25-minute session (as the episodes are called) is self-contained. This is ... a series where every kind of ground is covered as far as genre is concerned. There's action, there's science fiction, there's drama, there's even comedy to be found here, thanks in part to the varied cast of characters.

-One of Adult Swim’s most infamous edits for Cowboy Bebop was the handling of the shocking revelation of Gren’s breasts to Faye in episode 12 of the series. The network had zoomed in the camera to show the scene from above Gren’s chest. Some viewers of this episode felt that editing this scene reduced the impact of the revelation as Faye’s dialogue in response to what she saw was the only way to indicate what the viewer was witnessing.

The story line for the final episode of the Cowboy Bebop series, "The Real Folk Blues, Part 2," offers a poignant realization that all things come to an end. Just as Spike has united with Julia after three years, Vicious takes over the Red Dragon crime syndicate. Spike and Julia run to Annie's store to rescue her, only to be attacked by syndicate gangsters. One of the saddest, most beautiful entries in the series, the episode ends with Spike finally confronting his past to the tune of the Beatles' "Carry That Weight." ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Besides videos and DVD's, other Cowboy Bebop items are available for purchase. There are several soundtracks available, including three OST's from the series alone. Models of Spike's Swordfish II can be found at hobby stores or online retailers. A couple of statues, particularly of Faye Valentine, have been spotted. Kaiyodo Xebec, the creator of some Evangelion and Trigun figures, has just released a Spike Spiegel figure in Japan and it will be available in the US in 2002. There's even a Cowboy Bebop manga!

Weird, funny, and oddly touching, Cowboy Bebop is a wonderful mix of themes and styles. The characters are complicated and bizzare, but always fun. The show is exciting, varying from the Zaney to the dead serious in style. Yet it all works. You really have to see Ed to believe her!
