Where Cowboy Bebop triumphs is in its lazy depiction of what it's like to be one of the Good Guys in this decrepit future. Beautiful, melancholy jazz music haunts every episode, punctuated by Spike and Jet's banter, and their occasional angst-less philosophical musings.

Cowboy Bebop premiered on Cartoon Network as part of Adult Swim on September 2, 2001 after airing in Japan in 1998. The show is about Spike Spiegel, a futuristic bounty hunter who is pretty laid-back until he has to use his deadly martial arts. He meets up with Jet Black and Faye Valentine, and the three become partners as they become intergalactic bounty hunters.

Cowboy Bebop, set in 2071 on an incredibly terraformed Mars in the highly cosmopolitan Alba City, (a fascinating polyglot incarnation of New York, Paris, and Mittel Europa with a huge Moroccan enclave), gets its title from the lead characters. They consist of a team of roguish bounty hunters: Spike Spiegel (Steven Jay Blum) the informally acknowledged leader, cool on the surface, emotionally troubled inside; the tough-looking yet kind-hearted, ex-cop, cyborg Jet Black (Beau Billingslea); the spunky, voluptuous, Amazon-like Faye Valentine (Wendee Lee); and the precocious, eccentrically behaved and named teenaged girl computer hack-meister Edward Wong-hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV (Melissa Charles) - Ed for short. These compelling protagonists enjoy the companionship and considerable aid of a bioengineered, intellectually enhanced Pembroke Welsh Corgi called Ein (a nod to Albert Einstein) while they travel the solar system looking for gigs aboard their patched-together space vehicle, The Bebop.

The Bebop is the home of such cowboys. Only here can one find a ragtag group of individuals all gathered in one ship. Cowboy Bebop follows some of the adventures of these bounty hunters across the solar system. At the start, Spike Spiegel and Jet Black are the sole members of the bounty hunter team, but the group grows with the addition of Ein, the data dog; Faye Valentine, the sexy and deadly gambler; and Ed, the wacky super-hacker. The group travels from the various moons of Jupiter to the hostile environment of Venus, searching for bounty heads; often times they come out unsuccessful, but they've had their successes as well.

The plot is about two cowboys, Spike and Jet, who drive cattle across the stars, while playing their own blend of bebop music. The story is mainly concerned with the events leading up to the death of Spike, the main character, who dies at the end of the show.
