Cowboy Bebop: Characters
built 628 days ago
Unlike the larger body of mainstream anime, Cowboy Bebop is fairly free of annoying, bitchy female characters, tiresome "chibi" segments, and protagonists alive at the end. This unprecedented level of quality led to its banning in Japan, and an official apology from the Emperor to Otaku worldwide. However, despite its critics, it started a new trend for anime where the main character dies at the end of the show, like Spike, who happens to die in Cowboy Bebop.

Cowboy Bebop is a showcase of avant-garde style, from the snazzy visuals to the snappy stories to the enthusiastic, upbeat score. The sophisticated plots, which aren't afraid to kill off characters for plot purposes, an emotional shock, or even a comic effect, have a focused, adult science-fiction feel that's fairly unusual in anime. So does the dramatic art direction, which includes an unforgettable bullet-time tracking shot, a gorgeous memory/action montage, a striking amount of complex, baroque scenery, and astonishingly beautiful character compositions. But Yoko Kanno's wildly diverse musical score gets top credit for setting the scenes and giving this show an absolutely unique flavor of sly, laid-back beat-era cool.

Additionally, the amazing amount of detail makes the world of Cowboy Bebop really shine. When added up, all the little details help create a feeling that the episodes present a glimpse into a living, breathing world. The show is set in the near future, when humans have terraformed many planets in the Solar System, leaving the Earth behind (for reasons which are mysterious at first). However, people are still people, with their usual set of debts, favors, attitudes, plots, careers, etc. Many stock characters in Cowboy Bebop have more depth than leading characters in other anime.
