Cousteau: Sons
built 233 days ago
The first Cousteau album was self-produced and recorded in various home studios. 3,000 copies were released on the Global Warming label in 1999 and were quickly sold out. Subsequently Palm Pictures signed the group who then re-recorded the majority of the songs for the 2000 release of the eponymous album. The song The Last Good Day of the Year was used in TV adverts in the US and Italy and the group became well known in those countries, touring extensively.
Cousteau Cousteau debuted in 1999 with a self-released, eponymous effort showcasing their chocolate-smooth mix of Bacharach-style songwriting with modernist flourishes of groove and electronics. The brainchild of veteran songwriter and piano man Davey Ray Moor, Cousteau ... included lead vocalist Liam McKahey, guitarist Robin Brown, bassist Joe Peet (who also contributed violin), and drummer Craig Vear. The debut made quite a stir in the band's London home base, and soon the independent effort was picked up by Palm. Cousteau dropped stateside in 2000, and the combo ruffled feathers with a club tour, come critical appreciation of their strong Scott Walker, Roxy Music, and Nick Cave influences, and brief radio play at [A]dult alternative and modern rock outlets friendly to the combo's burnished sound.
It felt a little odd standing behind the tables as Liam McKahey and the latest evolution of Cousteau took to the stage for a long set in support of recent album Nova Scotia. The opulence of the venue perfectly suited the band's grand, yet laid back sound, rockier now than in the days of departed songwriter Davey Ray Moor.
