Love didn't have the greatest start to life. Aged 3 she was left with a friend of her mothers when her parents went to live in New Zealand. From then on she was installed in numerous boarding schools and taken to live on hippy communes in Europe and New Zealand where she didn't feel cared for. Courtney herself said,

Love hasn’t had contact with Coogan in months, except for an e-mail she sent him after Wilson’s suicide attempt. It read, “You must feel really great right now. Does this feel life-affirming?” Love has said on her Web site she’ll have no further comment.

For most of her life, Courtney traveled around with her family living mostly in hippie communes. After receiving a trust fund from her grandmother in 1984, Courtney decided to do a little traveling on her own visiting places such as Ireland, Japan, Taiwan, and Liverpool.
