The Motley Collection of Theatre and Costume Design is a valuable source of documentation on the history of theatre and is housed in the Rare Book and Special Collections Library. It is a rare collection of original materials on the theatre comprising over 5000 items from more than 150 productions in England and the United States. These materials include costume and set designs, sketches, notes, photographs, prop lists, storyboards, and swatches of fabric.
The Costume Design/Production program follows one of two tracks. The first of these is a three year residency at the Pippin - Fall 2004Tuscaloosa campus. The second track consists of a two year residency at the Tuscaloosa campus, followed by a season in residence at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery, Alabama. The internship is not automatic, but is contingent upon the student's progress during the first two years. Students going to ASF will have the opportunity to work with a variety of artisans, craftspeople, and designers as each show will bring an assignment in a different studio area. Assignments will include work with the wigmaster, the milliner, and the costume craftsperson.

Costume design ... has cataloged a collection of antique and vintage clothing. These garments are under the supervision of Fran Romasco, the Costume Shop Manager. The collection currently has over two hundred items; the oldest being an 1832 wedding dress from Massachusetts. The dress, petticoat, bodice and hoops were donated by Virginia Hood Stevens '43, along with many other family pieces. The Stevens donation became the impetus to begin conservation for the antique clothing. A project is currently underway to assure that each piece is stored appropriately for preservation.
