Costume Design: Work
built 130 days ago
All Costume Design majors are required to work in the costume shop on the shows produced by Theatre VCU. This gives them the opportunity to put into practice those skills learned in classes. The faculty supervisors will determine those assignments.

The Costume Department is responsible for the design, fitting, hire, purchase, manufacture, continuity and care of all costume items on feature films. The term 'Costume' refers to the clothes that the Actors wear, and these differ enormously from production to production, ranging from contemporary urban fashion to period ball-gowns, and even wetsuits. The Costume Department is ... responsible for jewellery, footwear, corsetry, hosiery, millinery and sometimes wig-work. Costume is integral in defining the overall 'look' of the film. It provides the audience with information about the period, culture and society the Actors inhabit and, on a more subtle level, the underlying themes of the film itself. Work in the Costume Department is divided between two 'wardrobes': the 'Making Wardrobe', which incorporates the design, acquisition and creation of costume during pre-production; and the 'Running Wardrobe', which takes care of the organisation, maintenance and continuity of costumes during the film shoot.

Lily Wasik has recieved a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Costume Design at Point Park University. While she has worked with a variety of styles and periods, Lily does have a preference to the costuming and styles of the Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian eras. Her love for these periods is often reflected in both her stage design, as well as her fashion design.

The wardrobe assistant works to the wardrobe supervisor, master or mistress and is an integral part of the team process to ensure that the costume design realisation is carried out. They are primarily concerned with dressing the artist/s and the maintenance of costume and costume continuity. They stand by on set whilst artists are filming and help maintain costumes. They may be required to carry out costume alterations and small makes.

During the shows, you will probably be needed to actually make sure that the costumes are on the right actors at the right time, although some shows will have dressers to reduce the workload on the costume designers. Make sure that for whatever show you are doing, you know what will be expected of you.
