Costume Design: Characters
built 224 days ago
The art of Costume Design involves a number of factors. Of course, the work must be appropriate to the era of the film (whether it be the present, the past or a fantastical time). It ... must feel appropriate to the circumstances the characters are in (you can’t have every costume looking as though it’s come directly from the tailor).
Your exploration of the art and craft of costume design will happen concurrently with the course's theoretical unit in costume design. It is impossible to coordinate separate deadlines for the two projects as the demands of mounting a production has differing deadlines depending on the area of responsibility. Scene Design deadlines tend to happen at the beginning of the process. Property Design work happen during the rehearsal. Costume Design deadlines happen toward the end as characters develop through the rehearsal process. Poster and Program Designs fall at a time appropriate for advertisement and the like.

Costume Design is the effective interpretation of character through the information obtained from the script, and by close collaboration with the director and other designers. It is through analysis of the script, researching the period, understanding why people wore the clothes they did, and adapting all those things to the director's concept, that makes a successful design. Costume design is not simply a regurgitation of pictures in a book; it is developing a character through the choice of clothes and accessories that ultimately helps support the actor in becoming that character, as well as, the other design elements for the production.

Costume classes focus on the developing idea of character and clothing design in connection to a text. Students are required to explore many texts from the classics to musicals. Each project is critiqued in class.
Costume designs ... need to include any accessories such as canes, hats, gloves, shoes, jewelry or masks. These costume props add a great deal of visual interest to the overall costume design. They are often the items that truly distinguish one character from another.

The "design" is in the appropriate selection of the clothing, and the fit for the actor. This sounds easy and it is. However, the success of a costume design depends on what is says to an audience and how it enhances the character of the actor. This unit explores the process of costume design from text to a paper design. Trust the process and engage in multiple possibilities. Your imagination is the only limit. However, an informed and disciplined imagination renders greater results.
