Corrosion: Environments

Some 4,000 gallons of oil and water leaked from a 24-inch pipeline. (Courtesy photo) "Corrosion has been a problem on the North Slope. That investigation of the cause is a key element in addition to the clean up itself trying to get it cleaned up as quickly as possible and minimize the impact on the tundra," Program Manager with the Department of Environmental Conservation Leslie Pearson said.

Tantalum (Ta) shows excellent corrosion resistance and is a rather expensive material. Therefore, Ta has been used for critical components in chemical plants under highly corrosive environments. However, one of the typical degradation phenomenon of Ta is the hydrogen absorption embrittlement. Only a few studies have been done on nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of hydrogen absorption embrittlement and its life management of Ta components with respect to hydrogen embrittlement.

Microbial Corrosion of a Fire Hydrant There are a number of mechanisms associated with this form of corrosion, and detailed explanations are available at the web sites listed at the bottom of this section. Most MIC takes the form of pits that form underneath colonies of living organic matter and mineral and biodeposits. This biofilm creates a protective environment where conditions can become quite corrosive and corrosion is accelerated.
Crevice corrosion is a corrosion occurring in spaces to which the access of the working fluid from the environment is limited. These spaces are generally called crevices. Examples of crevices are gaps and contact areas between parts, under gaskets or seals, inside cracks and seams, spaces filled with deposits and under sludge piles.
AOC is leading the composites industry’s fight against the high cost of corrosion. From underground storage tanks in North America to desalination facilities in the Middle East, AOC resins have decades of proven strength and durability in hostile, corrosive environments.
NACE International is a professional association dedicated to promoting public safety, protecting the environment, and reducing the economic impact of corrosion. Established in 1943, it has over 15,000 members worldwide and offers technical training and certification programs, sponsors conferences and produces industry standards, reports, publications, and software.
