The Royal Institution of Cornwall was formed in 1818 and moved to its present site in River Street in 1919 to the building that was originally Truro Savings Bank. The museum and art galley are well worth a visit. The museum features collections that depict Cornish history from the earliest times, the Rashleigh mineral collection, pottery, including work by Bernard Leach, and natural history exhibits. The art gallery includes paintings by the well-known Cornish artist John Opie. There are ... visiting exhibitions throughout the year. It has an interesting shop and spacious café which is a popular meeting place.

Many place names in Cornwall are associated with Christian missionaries described as coming from Ireland and Wales in the fifth century AD and usually called saints (See List of Cornish saints). The historicity of some of these missionaries is problematic[49] and it has been pointed out by Doble that it was customary in the Middle Ages to ascribe such geographic origins to saints.[50] Some of these saints are not included in the early lists of saints.[51]

The Dukedom of Cornwall always belongs to the eldest son of the Sovereign. Cornwall was the first dukedom ever conferred in the Kingdom of England, being created for Edward, the Black Prince, the eldest son of Edward III in 1337. After Edward predeceased the King, the dukedom was recreated for his son, the future Richard II. Under a charter of 1421, the dukedom passes to the Sovereign's eldest son and heir.
