Cornwall is a city of 47,000 people, situated along the St. Lawrence River and Highway 401. Cornwall has a strong gastronomic heritage. Surrounded on three sides by the sea amid fertile fishing grounds, Cornwall naturally has fresh seafood readily available; Newlyn is the largest fishing port in the UK by value of fish landed.[70] Television chef Rick Stein has long operated a fish restaurant in Padstow for this reason, and Jamie Oliver recently chose to open his second restaurant, Fifteen, in Watergate Bay near Newquay. Masterchef host and founder of Smiths of Smithfield, John Torode, in 2007 purchased Seiners in Perranporth. In St Ives Porthminster Cafe is a renowned beach restaurant as is The Boardroom at The Blue Bar in Porthtowan. One famous local fish dish is Stargazy pie, a fish-based pie in which the heads and tails of the fish stick through the pasty crust, as though "star-gazing". The pie is cooked as part of traditional celebrations for Tom Bawcock's Eve.

Cornwall enjoys an excellent climate with very mild winters and summers that are almost Mediterranean in nature. This climate has in turn helped with the growth and development of a wealth of botanical gardens in Cornwall that have become renown worldwide. Should ... the climate not be warm enough, then artificial environments such as the Eden Project near St Austell have been created to show off even more diverse equatorial plant life.

Coal is not native to Cornwall, so it had to be imported, by ship, to keep the engines in steam. Getting coal to the engines was in itself a difficult and expensive operation. Water was sometimes used to power waterwheels, but suitable rivers were not plentiful either in Cornwall.

Cornwall was once better known not for its tourism industry but its output of Tin from its array of Tin Mines. Mining and fishing were at one point the two main industries in Cornwall and whilst the mines have all since been closed down the fishing industry continues to flourish around Cornwalls Coast allthough perhaps not to the extent of past decades. Newlyn on the South Coast of Cornwall is a major fishing port in Cornwall with a thriving commercial fish market and a host of all types of fishing vessels from small crab boats to large beam trawlers. Nearly all the coastal villages and towns in Cornwall have a fishing background and at some point would have been the staple food of those in the immediate area. While the fishing has stopped or been significantly reduced in many of these village they have not lost their Fishing Village charm with small windy cobbled streets and quirky harbourside cottages. Mousehole near Penzance is a good example of such a place.
