The Corning area's first real industry was lumber. The first settlers used the area river systems to transport logs and finished lumber in fleets downstream to buyers. This gave rise to large mills which helped to develop the area. Rafting of lumber began to wane as timber was depleted. At one time the mills of the Corning area were reputed to be among the biggest in the world. After the lumber was depleted the great mills moved north to new forests.

Corning has two churches with some historical value. St. Bernard's Catholic Church is a monument to a long forgotten priest and many long dead fellow Catholics. The building they built both inside and out needs not take a back seat to any church anywhere for sheer beauty.

Dow Corning's new plan of Reorganization provides women with silicone breast implants, as well as people with Dow Corning medical devices, a variety of options to settle their claims. A unique feature of the plan is that people with claims can influence the amount of money they receive by voting for the plan in greater numbers. Most of the funds in the plan are designated for settlement although the option remains of pursuing claims in court. The plan calls for establishing two trusts: the Settlement Trust will administer claims filed by those voting for the plan, while the Litigation Trust will allow those voting against the plan to go through the trial process.
