Born into a rich Sunnydale family, Cordelia was the person to know if you wanted to be considered cool at Sunnydale High School. She was a cheerleader and the leader of the most popular clique, a group that taunted those they considered beneath them. Instantly recognizing her kind, she tried to befriend Buffy Summers on Buffy's first day at her new school. Cordelia was precisely the type of person Buffy would once have been interested in, having once been in Cordelia's position at her old school. But after her experiences in Los Angeles, being rejected by friends like Cordelia, Buffy was more drawn to the "losers" Willow and Xander whose friendship was more honest.

Eventually, Cordelia is discovered and Angel's team interrogate Skip, who reveals Jasmine's plan. He says that all the events of the last four years had been carefully nudged into place. Jasmine may have simply seized on Cordelia's knock from her body, but whether that was the case will never be known. Skip ... says that Jasmine cannot be removed from Cordelia without killing her or putting her into a permanent, vegetative state. Before Angel can kill the woman he loves, Cordelia performs a ritual with Connor's help to bring Jasmine out and manifest on this plane at last. Afterwards, Cordelia falls into a coma, her life-force having been drained.

Back in LA, Cordelia began to have feelings for Angel, though she remained somewhat unaware of it herself. The effects of her vision worsened. CAT scans showed brain deterioration. on her twenty-first birthday, a particular hefty vision left her in a coma. She projected herself unto the astral plane where she was offered a choice by the demon, Skip who claimed to have come on behalf of the Powers. He offered her the option to continue having the visions, which were never meant for humans, and die young, or to lead the alternate path that she could have taken when she reached LA had she not bumped into Angel.

After being rescued by Angel and talking to Allen Francis Doyle, Cordelia charms Angel into turning his fight against evil into a business. She becomes Angel Investigations's office manager while pursuing her acting career but never breaks out of commercials and plays. She reaches a turning point mid-season when her budding romance with Doyle ends with his sudden death. Visibly devastated, Cordelia attempts to carry on, but during an audition for a commercial, she receives her first vision, a gift transferred to her by Doyle during their first and last kiss. It gives her a powerful ability to help others, and over the course of the next few years, she comes to consider them her reason for being.

Then, on a night in June 1934, Cordelia served eight fried chicken dinners on her wedding china - for the all-inclusive price of 65 cents each - and the world's largest chicken dinner restaurant was born. Today, the Chicken Dinner Restaurant seats more than 900 guests at a time, serves more than 1. 5 million guests each year, and is the largest full-service restaurant that serves chicken as its main course.

For the duration of season two, though, Cordelia is delegated to the back of the crew with Wesley and Gunn, as Angel goes off on his own search. When Angel returns, he recognizes immediately that to win the good wishes of the others, he must first and foremost make his peace with Cordelia. It's not just that she's been worried about money while without the regular salary from Angel, it's ... that she considered herself an integral part of his team, and he fired her. 'Vision girl' had replaced her previous self-identity of 'high school princess,' and when he fired her, he left that identity in serious doubt.
