Coptic Christianity

Several traditions in Coptic Christianity are not practiced elsewhere, and could be lost if persecuted into extinction. Coptic traditions include services held in Coptic language, or Egyptian. As well, the Copt calendar differs from the Gregorian calendar. The beginning of the Common Era in Coptic religion is 284 CE.

A Muslim who converts to Coptic Christianity may be forced to divorce his/her spouse. Although the government contributes financially to the construction of mosques and pays the salaries of Muslim clerics, no such aid is given to Copts. Rather, even the most trivial maintenance projects in churches or church-owned buildings require a building permit to be signed by the President. Many such applications have been delayed for decades. Copts are restricted from senior government, military, educational, and diplomatic positions.
The incorporation of Jewish practices into Coptic Christianity has not benefitted Ethiopian Jews but, rather, has given rise to a great deal of hostility. The Kebra Nagast (Glory of Kings), the religious and national epic dating from the 14th century, illustrates Ethiopian Christianity's attitude toward Jews. It states that Ethiopia was chosen as Zion by God, because the Jews are "unworthy," "wicked," "Christ-killers," "enemies of God," and will therefore be exterminated. The Christians view the Jews, whose landlessness has forced them to work as potters and blacksmiths, as possessed by buda, a satanic occult power. This power, many Christians still believe, enables the Jews to turn into hyenas at night, possess young women, eat corpses or turn them into animals, prey on children, kill cattle, and turn people into donkeys to enslave them. Jews are often blamed for causing hunger, crop failure, blindness, insanity, illness, and death.

The missionary outreach of Coptic Christianity through the witness of the monks reached deep into Africa. This was notably the case very early on in Nubia and Ethiopia. The same Athanasius who opposed both the Emperor and Arianism ... consecrated Frumentius the first bishop of Aksum, the centre of the ancient Christian empire of Ethiopia. As a result the historical, spiritual, and theological ties between the Copts and the Ethiopians have always been intimate. And yet, significantly, the Copts did not impose on the culture of Ethiopia, but rather allowed Christianity in Ethiopia to develop in ways quite distinct—beginning with the translation of the Bible and the liturgy into Amharic.[32]

Lastly, Dr. Hanna is a follower of Coptic Christianity, the indigenous Christianity of Egypt that, according to tradition, the apostle Mark established in the middle of the first century. The third argument against Hanna’s CO claim is that it is “not Christian.” On the contrary. Christianity has much in its teaching and tradition to support Hanna's decision - the most notable of which is Jesus' refusal to use violence to save even His own life.
On the Upper Nile north of Thebes where the prevailing flow is east to west is the ancient center of Coptic Christianity. About 350 Pgol established an important cenobitic community, the White Monastery, based on the Rule of Pachomius (c. 290-346), near Sohag (Athribis/Atripe), some fifty miles downstream from Nag Hammadi, the source of Coptic Gnostic papyri. Administration passed from Pgol to his nephew Shenoute some time before 388.
