Wiegers "It's the common consent among the literati that Copper Canyon is the best poetry publisher in America," emphasizes Jim Harrison, the esteemed literary writer from Michigan. "Copper Canyon is so consistent -- they keep a poet's books in print and their books are always beautifully designed. They are singularly dedicated to publishing poetry. There's no one of that quality in the business. Period."
All Copper Canyon trips are on the historic Chihuahua al Pacífico Railroad. The train winds its way from the Pacific Ocean up into the heart of this scenic splendor. Built over a 90 year period, this world-famous railroad is an engineering masterpiece. It has been called "the most dramatic train ride in the western hemisphere."
The first white settlement in the area that would become Copper Canyon occurred in the 1840s. One of the more prominent settler families was that of Elisha and Mary Chinn, who came to Texas from their original home in North Carolina in 1852. They helped establish the first church in the area, a log-cabin chapel which eventually became known as the Chinn's Chapel Methodist Church. The church is still active on what is now known as Chinn Chapel Road.
The Copper Canyon provides an outdoor experience so shockingly pure and majestic that visitors feel as if they’ve entered into a whole new world. One of the unique features of this adventure is that a train ride is the only way to really experience the Canyon’s wonders first hand. The small towns off the beaten track provide just enough amenities to make this the trip of a lifetime.
The route of the railroad through the Copper Canyon region is considered an engineering marvel as it passes through 87 tunnels and over 35 bridges. The train climbs from sea level to over 8,000 feet providing 360º views of spellbinding chasms and spectacular side canyons.
