Copland: Piano Variations
built 650 days ago
Copland's first orchestral piece was Grohg, a ballet composed while he was studying with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. It was not performed or published then, but at various times through the years, he pulled from it what he considered usable. One section, Dance of the Adolescent, became a two piano arrangement.

Describing his Fantasy for Piano, Copland explains his application of the 12-tone technique: "[T]welve-tonism is nothing more than an angle of vision. . . . It is a method, not a style; and therefore it solves no problems of musical expressivity."

In the thirties, Copland taught part time at the Henry Street Settlement. He wrote this chorus for the Girls' Glee Club. It is a simple setting of a text by Henry Abbey for soprano and alto voices with piano accompaniment. Copland enjoyed composing for young performers. He said, "After all, they grow up and become our audiences."
