Copland composed three numbered symphonies, but applied the word “symphony” to more than just symphonies. His early three-movement Organ Symphony was rewritten omitting the organ, calling the result his First Symphony. His fifteen-minute Short Symphony was the Second Symphony, though it ... exists as the Sextet. The Third Symphony in the more traditional format (four movements; second movement, scherzo; third movement, adagio) with a forty-five minute approximate run-time. His Dance Symphony was hurriedly extracted from the earlier unproduced ballet Grohg to meet an RCA Records commission deadline.

During the interrogation, Copland was a model of dignity and, in his answers, gave the committee no information that corroborated the Committee in its "witchhunts." Frustrated by this less than useful witness, the Committee dismissed Copland, but, as a result of his questioning, the performance of A Lincoln Portrait scheduled for President Dwight D. Eisenhower's inauguration a mere two weeks later was cancelled by government officials.

Copland next came to Oberlin in 1958, when he was one of five honorary-degree recipients at commencement. The program indicates that then-assistant professor Walter Aschaffenberg presented him as a candidate for the Doctor of Music degree. His fellow honorary-degree recipients were Ruth Ingram, Dale McMillen, Harry Ashmore, and Paul Sears.

To run under Copland, extensions you've developed will need to be revised. You'll make the transition easier for users if your applications that ship with extensions are able to run without these extensions installed. Also, desk accessories will no longer be supported in Copland; if you depend on any desk accessories, you should rewrite them as small applications.
