Copland: Appalachian Spring
built 649 days ago
Even in the absence of classics such as ``Appalachian Spring'' or ``Rodeo,'' Copland's populist side was well represented. Amid spoken considerations of the composer's history and importance, Thomas led the orchestra in a jaunty rendition of ``El Salon Mexico'' and an even jauntier account of ``Danzon Cubano,'' two wondrous demonstrations of how to use vernacular strains in concert music without pretentiousness or condescension.

Being concerned with the gap between contemporary composers and the public, Copland began to compose some pieces in a more accessible style, often influenced by his visits to Mexico at the invitation of Carlos Chavez. El Salon Mexico (1936), Billy The Kid (1938) and Rodeo (1942) all fall in this period, as does Appalachian Spring.

The American West atmosphere of the television miniseries The Chisholms (1979) was greatly enhanced by quotes from the Copland ballets Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, and Rodeo. The TV series Action in the Afternoon (1953) quotes from the Billy the Kid Ballet Suite which fits the Montana location of one of its stars, the singing cowboy Jack Valentine who played himself in the show. Other television series which borrowed music from Copland were The World of Nick Adams (1957) and The Seven Lively Arts (1957).
