Through several off-season tests, the new Cooper Atlantic racing slicks and rain tires have consistently demonstrated the ability to deliver the mail quickly and reliably, no matter what the conditions. Over the course of the first two series-sanctioned open tests – at Florida’s Sebring International Raceway in January and earlier this month at MSR Houston in Texas – competitors logged nearly 20,000 miles of track time on the new Cooper tires. And through the heat, rain and high winds in Sebring to the cold temperatures present at MSR Houston, the Atlantic tires have proven durable and have given the Mazda-Cosworth/Swift cars a high level of performance.

Cooper Tire will ... offer a Series Championship Contingency Award if a driver completes all seven races on Cooper tires and wins first, second or third place overall in the 2007 Formula D Championship. The first place award will be $15,000, second place will be $10,000 and third place will be $5,000. The next two highest rated drivers in championship points, running Cooper tires at all seven events, will receive $1,500 each.

Several Cooper Tire models are facing public scrutiny for their possible role in dozens of fatal automobile accidents. According to reports, Cooper tires may develop shoulder area cracks which can cause tread separation leading to a sudden deflation of the tire. Similar to what caused the Firestone tire scandal, this defect may lead to serious injury or death if an accident ensues. To date, Cooper tires have been linked to 35 fatalities on U.S. highways. The billion-dollar tire maker is facing numerous lawsuits as a result.

During the news conference at SEMA, Cooper Tire personnel as well as Tagliani and Muniz signed the pledge. In addition, visitors to the Cooper Tire booth (#40341) during the show were invited to sign a specially-wrapped Champ Car Atlantic Series car as a symbol of their own pledge.
