Hitachi makes many types of engine control units, either printed circuit board or ceramic board (for higher temperature environments). The above unit is a water-proofed printed circuit board type ECU for engine compartment mounting (not for on-engine mounting).

Marion was not originally built as a control unit prison. It has ... been inadequate for the task of implementing the even tighter control of prisoners which BOP Director J. Michael Quinlan, in testimony before a Congressional subcommittee in the fall of 1989, said would constitute an improvement upon Marion's existing regimen (Lehman, 1990: 36-7). The BOP has decided to replace Marion with a control unit prison in Florence, Colorado specifically designed to achieve this goal. Scheduled to open in 1993, the prison's state-of-the-art technology will help to eliminate even the minimal levels of human contact prisoners have at Marion. It has proved very difficult to find out exact details of the new control unit prison to be built at Florence. When a Freedom of Information Act request for information on plans for Florence was submitted to the BOP, the BOP denied the request on the basis that the plans did not yet exist [7].
