Continental Circus
built 217 days ago
Continental Circus is a F1 racing game, featured dynamic weather and pitstops. This is probably the first arcade driving game to possess these features. It is believed that the word "circus" resulted from a bad translation from japanese to english, and this game name should actually be "Continental Circuit". However all the following home conversions would ... be named "Continental Circus".

Continental Circus is an arcade racing game created and manufactured by Taito in 1987. It was then republished in 1989 along with a home version of the game, which was available on various platforms including the Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Amiga, Commodore 64, MSX and ZX Spectrum.

Continental Circus was unique at the time in that certain cabinets came supplied with a '3D visor', through which the player viewed the action. The visor, similar in outward appearance to the one used in Atari's "Battlezone", produced a simple but effective 3D effect. This effect could be disabled by the arcade operator via the dip switch settings.

Continental Circus was covered in the Arcade Action section back in October 1988, and now here's the chance to enjoy all the thrills and spills of racing witi out needing pockets full of 10ps. Of course the coin-op had impressive 3-D glasses stuck on the front of it, and unfortunately the computer version's done away with this luxury.

All the sprites in Continental Circus are excellent, if somewhat reminiscent of WEC Le Mans. They include girls in skimpy swim suits running onto screen holding up cards and waving flags (fwoor!). The screen is split into two monochrome colours, with just a touch of red coming onto the car when it is on fire.
