Continental Airlines, Inc. (Continental), incorporated in 1980, is a United States air carrier engaged in the business of transporting passengers, cargo and mail. As of December 31, 2007, the Company, together with its wholly owned subsidiary, Continental Micronesia, Inc. (CMI), and regional flights operated on its behalf under capacity purchase agreements with other carriers, operated more than 2,900 daily departures. As of December 31, 2007, Continental flew to 134 domestic and 130 international destinations, and offered additional connecting service through alliances with domestic and foreign carriers. The Company directly served 27 European cities, nine South American cities, Tel Aviv, Delhi, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Beijing and Tokyo as of December 31, 2007. In addition, it provides service to destinations in Mexico and Central America serving 41 cities. Through its Guam hub, CMI provides service in the western Pacific, including service to Japanese cities.
Following his appointment to the presidency of Continental Airlines, Six led the company through a period of rapid expansion. First on his agenda was the task of enlarging the airline's fleet of planes. At that time, the DC-3 was the most popular, practical, and durable plane on the market; unfortunately, it was ... the most expensive, and Continental could not afford it. Instead, Six decided to purchase a number of L-14 Lodestars from Lockheed, and then hired 12 of the company's first stewardesses to staff the new planes. Meanwhile, the company also was working to expand its flight route network, which had previously consisted of a circuit that ran between Denver, Colorado, and El Paso, Texas. First to be added were services to Wichita, Kansas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
