Continental Airlines is the world's sixth-largest airline. Northwest Airlines (NW), and Continental Airlines (CO), are the two major American carriers to order the 787. With teh 767 fleets operated by Delta (DL), American (AA), US, and UA pushing retirement, the airlines need new airplanes. The next round of 787 v A350 is coming up, with about 30 airlines around the world expected to announce new fleet choices.
Continental Airlines has a fleet of more than 365 planes covering more than 290 destinations. The Airline operates more than 3,000 flights a day from all its destinations. It carries about 65 million passengers a year.

On 25 July 2000, Continental Airlines flight 55, a DC-10 contributed to the crash of Air France Concorde Flight 4590 in Paris. The Continental jet dropped a strip of metal from its thrust reverser on the runway, which subsequently caused the Concorde's tires to explode as it began its takeoff roll. The exploding tires shot large pieces of the tires into Concorde's wing fuel tanks, starting fires in engines 3 and 4, leading to the crash which killed all aboard.
