Container Gardening: Water
built 627 days ago
While corn and a few other crops may not be as appropriate for container gardening as traditional outdoor planting, even they can be grown in containers. Many other plants respond very well to the container. This even includes watermelons (the smaller fruited varieties are best) trained to trellises (with the fruit supported in slings tied to the trellis). Bush-type squash, tomatoes, chiles, and almost any vegetable or flower you wish to plant can be grown in a container.

Location: Before you purchase any plant materials, consider your location; it is one of the most important factors for good container gardening. Plants can be grown in sun, part-sun, part-shade or shade, so make sure the plants you purchase match the lighting requirements where they will be planted. If you are combining different plants in a single container or grouping several containers together at the same site, make sure they share similar light requirements. Do not mix plants that require sun with those that do well only in shady areas. Make sure, too, that your plants share the same watering needs.

Sufficient nutrients.Fertilizers are critical in container gardening, but shouldn’t be used as a cure-all. Provide a controlled release fertilizer at planting and a soluble fertilizer every second watering for most plants, but don’t add extra fertilizer every time a leaf yellows. If you’re fertilizing properly, then consider water and light if your plants aren’t at peak health.
Nebraska’s weather can make container gardening a challenge. Extreme summer heat coupled with high winds can quickly dry the roots of container plants. This can be minimized by carefully selecting plants, growing media, site and watering methods.
Watering is one of the most important jobs a container gardener will perform. Some vegetables need watering every day, depending on container size and weather conditions. The best way to water is with a watering can or sprayer attachment on a garden hose. Be sure the water is cool before applying it to the vegetables, particularily if the hose sits in the sun. Hot water does not stimulate root development.

Proper watering is essential for a successful container garden. Generally one watering per day is adequate. However, poor drainage will slowly kill the plants. The mix will become water-logged and plants will die from lack of oxygen. If at all possible, avoid wetting the foliage of plants since wet leaves will encourage plant diseases. Always remember that each watering should be done with the nutrient solution except for the weekly leaching with tap water.
