Consumer Reports: Tests

MADISON, Wis. -- Consumer Reports tests freezers in a chamber where conditions are carefully controlled. The freezers are filled with frozen spinach and the temperature is monitored by sensors imbedded in the spinach.

Many of Consumer Reports' top ranked products use electrostatic or ionizing technologies which add an electric charge to airborne particles which causes them to temporarily adhere to a nearby surface. In the testing chamber, this temporarily attracts the particle away from the detection area of the particle counting equipment, but when the electric charge dissipates those particles can quickly become airborne again. Consumer Reports' does not distinguish between particles permanently removed by the air cleaner and charged particles that are temporarily attached to test chamber surfaces through ionization. The HealthPro Plus cleans the air by filtration only, permanently removing particles from the room -- never to become airborne again.
For a grill that costs even less, Consumer Reports suggests trying the Champ from George Foreman. It has fewer features than the Hamilton Beach grill. But at $25, it's a great grill for the money, according to the testers.

Consumer Reports accepts no advertising and claims to have bias-free reviews as a result. They buy all their products and services for review on the open market, the same as any consumer would. Their advice, ratings, and recommendations are based on their independent testing of both products and services. Their income comes from the sale of their magazine and other information sources. They ... receive contributions, grants, and fees designated as nonrestrictive and noncommercial.
Consumer Reports' new Top Pick list for 2007 includes a new category, for fuel-efficient subcompact cars. The Honda Fit is the Top Pick in that category. Missing from the Top Pick list this year is the Pickup Truck category; CR is not naming a vehicle in that category pending upcoming testing of newly released full-size pickup trucks. The Honda Ridgeline and Chevrolet Avalanche are previous Top Pick trucks.

Consumer Reports tested the Venta-Airwasher the same way it tests all air purifiers, in a sealed chamber. A measured amount of fine dust is put into the room, followed by cigarette smoke. A particle counter keeps track of the number of particles in the air that are three microns or smaller. The Venta-Airwasher didn't do anything to clean the air of very small particles. The number of dust and smoke particles stayed the same over the course of 90 minutes.
