ocp in the news Following an investigation by Montgomery County’s Office of Consumer Protection (OCP), an arrest warrant has been obtained for an unlicensed home improvement contractor who was paid $82,500 but failed to provide the agreed upon services. The warrant, issued on January 17, charges Cesar Suazo Rivera of Falls Church, Virginia with acting as a home improvement contractor without the required license, abandoning the job, and felony theft. WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Senior lawmakers, led by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection, recently introduced the Damaged Vehicle Information Act, H.R. 6093, to ensure that totaled and flood-damaged vehicles are flagged forever so that consumers and auto retailers can make more informed decisions about the safety and fair market value of used cars.

On April 20, President Bush signed into law the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005. The Act represents the most comprehensive set of changes to the Bankruptcy Code in more than 25 years. The new law takes effect on Oct. 17. Anyone who files for bankruptcy protection after this date will have to comply with the new law.
